Community Programs

Helping our youth develop Spiritually, Emotionally, and Academically

Imagine a childhood with very little opportunity to play and enjoy life. Unfortunately this is the reality for many children in Haiti, especially girls. The mission of New Roots is to help end generational poverty in Chiron Haiti. We believe strongly that a person can not rise above poverty if they can not hope and dream about the future.

Bible Program

In Haiti it’s required to have dress clothes and shoes in order to attend. Attending church is mostly something grown ups do and Sunday School options are rare.  Therefore, most of the children in our community have never heard about the love or our Savior.

In our bible program, children get the chance to learn all about Jesus in a fun and engaging way.  Each day they read from the Jesus Storybook Bible, which has been translated into Creole, and play a series of games/activities that go along with each lesson.  We have developed a 150 page student workbook which has word searches, crafts, coloring sheets, and discussion questions.

Through this program, our children are advancing in both reading and writing, skills that often aren’t taught well in local schools.

Youth Sports

Our sports program offers 250 youth in our area the opportunity to play and have fun while learning important life skills such as team work, critical thinking, and so much more.

We are using sports as an avenue to reach the youth in Chiron and help bring about social change.  The children are also taught topics on nutrition, mental/ physical health, hygiene, and more.

We are promoting gender equality and the right for EVERYONE to be treated fairly, including those with disabilities. Our soccer program is planting seeds that will help change the life trajectory for these youth.

In addition, we also have over 100 children who come to play at our playground 6 days a week.

Each of the children are given a nutritional snack of Vita Mamba (locally produced peanut butter snack that is designed to prevent malnutrition) before every practice.

Mental Health Program

Mental Health is a topic not addressed or understood in Haiti.  When someone has a mental break down, the solution is often for a group of men to tie them to a chair for a few days until they have regulated enough to be let out.

A common cooping mechanism to trauma is laughter and joking.

Our mental health program is helping youth identify and process emotions.  It provides them with a safe place to unpack everyday challenges in the presence of a child psychologist.

Academics

The schools in our area are very poor, and it’s not uncommon to have 6th graders who can’t write their name or identify basic colors.  Some kids can even graduate from high school with out learning how to read.

Although we are not a school, we seek to help our youth advance academically at any chance we can.

Through our preschool program and reading clubs, we are helping many of the youth advance in ways that the school system isn’t.  Education is very important in Haiti as parents and kids alike realize it’s their ticket out of povery.
