Several years ago a pastor built a school in our Village of Chiron, however not enough parents had the ability to pay for tuition, so the school has sat empty for years. The children who are fortunate enough to be able to attend school, now have to walk between 1-2 hours to neighboring villages. They leave their homes as early as 5 am to ensure they arrive before class starts.
There were seven boys in our village whose parents had saved enough money to pay for this years tuition, but didn’t have enough to pay for backpacks or shoes for their children. As a result, these seven boys missed the first two weeks of school.
We are proud to announce that after just 4 days of work here at New Roots, this is a hurdle these children and their parents no longer have to worry about.
Tet, our Projects Director took the group of boys into town and helped them purchase back packs, shoes, notebooks, and pens.
The next day an Uncle of one of the boys who had been paying his school fees for a few years made the journey out to Chiron. He asked the boy and his family why they hadn’t come and asked for assistance. They replied “Nick gave us work and we were able to pay for it on our own this year.” The Uncle then came to our gate, gave Tet a hug and thanked him for all he is doing for the community of Chiron.
These boys and their families were empowered. They were given the tools they needed to improve their life. They were given a hand up not a hand out! This is how we want to go about change in Chiron, through job creation, education, and empowerment.
